Van Gisbergen denies Davison Sunday Gold Coast pole

SHANE van Gisbergen will start Sunday’s final leg of the Boost Mobile Gold Coast 500 from pole position having proven too good in the Top 10 Shootout.

Van Gisbergen was the last driver on track in the Shootout and delivered a sizzling 1:10.3133s, knocking off previous fast-man Will Davison by 0.3236s.

It was a thrilling Shootout with seven of the 10 drivers going to the top of the order with their effort amid plenty of hairy moments on the challenging street circuit.

“It felt pretty good,” said van Gisbergen, who recorded a 45th career pole position.

“I had to try to do what Davey (Reynolds) did yesterday and switch it on on that first lap.

“It felt awesome; now we have to try to do it in the race so it’s pretty cool.”

Cam Waters will start third ahead of Chaz Mostert, Scott Pye, Brodie Kostecki, David Reynolds, Thomas Randle, James Golding and Anton De Pasquale.

The first three drivers on track all had moments at Turn 11 – Golding clipping the apex wall, Kostecki understeering wide and De Pasquale catching a costly bout of oversteer.

Randle was conservative during the early part of his lap and slotted into second behind Kostecki, before Pye, Mostert and Waters all lowered the benchmark time.

Waters’ lap was particularly spectacular, tagging the concrete on the exit of Turn 11 and then locking his rear brakes into the final corner.

Saturday polesitter Reynolds was out next and went fastest in the first sector before losing time in the second and temporarily moving into fifth.

“I just did a scrappy job,” he admitted. “I got a bad run out of (turn) four and tried to make it up.”

Davison bumped everyone back a spot with his lap before van Gisbergen blew that away.

Van Gisbergen will now take aim at a 21st win of the season in this afternoon’s 250km race.
