WAU, Team 18 nearing driver announcements

MORE pieces of the Supercars silly season puzzle are set to formally fall into place shortly after racing wraps up at The Bend.

It was confirmed today that Jack Le Brocq will depart Matt Stone Racing in favour of Erebus Motorsport for the 2024 Repco Supercars Championship, following news that Will Brown will replace NASCAR-bound Shane van Gisbergen at Triple Eight.

Walkinshaw Andretti United and Team 18 are set to follow suit and confirm their 2024 plans in the coming weeks.

It’s expected, albeit unconfirmed as yet, that Kiwi young gun Ryan Wood will get the nod in WAU’s #2 entry and David Reynolds will join Team 18, leaving race winners Nick Percat and Scott Pye as free agents.

While not commenting on specifics, both WAU team principal Bruce Stewart and Team 18 owner Charlie Schwerkolt indicated more will become public soon.

“We’re working through it and clearly want to have it ratified before we get to Sandown,” said Stewart.

Less than a month remains until the Sandown 500 (September 15-17).

Schwerkolt meanwhile said it was a case of “the sooner the better”, adding an announcement “could be as early as next week or the week after”.

Percat has particularly been the subject of long-running speculation surrounding his future, with Stewart offering praise for how the 2011 Bathurst 1000 winner has handled the situation.

“These things are always hard mentally on people, when these things are so publicly aired, but he has been amazing,” said Stewart.

“From the young guy I got to know in 2011 to where he is now, his maturity and ability to handle these things and compartmentalise it has been really admirable.

“He’ll be here ready to go tomorrow and focused on putting the best foot forward.”
