Where WAU has taken a step forward

WALKINSHAW Andretti United team principal Carl Faux has pinpointed some strengths and weaknesses of his squad’s 2024-spec Mustangs.

WAU has made a reasonably good start to the season, with Chaz Mostert perched third in the championship and rookie Ryan Wood flashing pace.

Faux highlighted chassis balance as a major positive, allowing their cars to be fast over a single lap as well as long runs.

That’s in contrast to last year, where as a whole the Fords tended to qualify well but suffered excessive tyre degradation in races.

“Our chassis balance is really good and the car really looks after its tyres,” said Faux.

“The drivers aren’t really wanting anything and it can pull a lap time without hurting the tyres.”

So, what’s next on the agenda?

“We now need to get the starts right and work on some straight-line handling to see where we end up.”

Starts have been a focus for Wood for quite some time, while slow getaways were particularly noticeable for Mostert in the Saturday and Sunday races – potentially costing him victory on either day.

Round 3 of the 2024 Repco Supercars Championship will unfold at Taupō Motorsport Park on April 19-21.
