Erebus open to NASCAR/Supercars wildcard

EREBUS Motorsport has left the door open for the possibility of fielding a NASCAR star in Supercars in the future.

Brodie Kostecki will next month become the second Supercars star this year to make a cameo appearance in the NASCAR Cup Series, following Shane van Gisbergen’s ultra-successful debut in Chicago.

The trend has prompted the idea of a NASCAR driver trying their hand in Supercars, and Erebus could be a realistic option to facilitate that given its growing relationship with Richard Childress Racing, with whom Kostecki will race.

Erebus had at one point considered running a 2023 Bathurst 1000 wildcard with its third Gen3 chassis before pulling the pin, as it focuses on its main two Chevrolet Camaros in the championship hunt.

“I don’t know; hopefully,” was Erebus CEO Barry Ryan’s initial response to V8 Sleuth when quizzed on the possibility for down the track.

“Richard (Childress) has already talked about coming to Australia for the first time ever and hopefully that happens at Adelaide this year.

“That would be exciting just for motorsport in Australia in general.

“Kyle (Busch) has obviously driven that Supercar over there that Terry (Wyhoon) owns.

Kyle Busch, and the VF Commodore at Virginia International Raceway

“I’m sure Kyle would love to do it, or Austin (Dillon), or one of those guys.

“It would be an interesting concept.”

RCR has acquired an ex-Walkinshaw/Erebus Holden VF Commodore Supercar, and it’s known that Busch drove the car last month at Virginia International Raceway with Erebus personnel in attendance.

Any such wildcard effort almost certainly would not be for the 2023 enduros however, with the Sandown 500 entry deadline having already passed.

There is expected to be three wildcards at this year’s Sandown 500 and Bathurst 1000, with Dick Johnson Racing and the Blanchard Racing Team set to join Triple Eight in running an additional entry.
