The quirky history waiting for Waters at The Bend

A QUIRKY piece of Repco Supercars Championship awaits Cam Waters this weekend at The Bend Motorsport Park.

The Monster Energy Mustang driver will celebrate his 100th Supercars Championship round this weekend when he rolls out for action in South Australia, however his recent form has positioned him in such a way he could end up with a quirky championship record.

Waters, who currently sits third in the championship pointscore, has finished third in the last three races in a row this season.

He finished third in the final race at Hidden Valley in Darwin and then finished third in both races in Townsville.

Jamie Whincup was the last driver to finish third three times in a row (in 2018) and Rick Kelly and Peter Brock both finished third in four consecutive races (in 2007 and 1977 respectively), however no driver has ever finished third five times in a row in championship history.

Waters has finished on the podium in eight of the last 11 races this season and won a race last year at The Bend, sharing the wins with fellow Mustang drivers Anton De Pasquale and Andre Heimgartner.

“We’ve been pretty strong at The Bend the last couple of years, so I’m definitely excited to be heading back there this weekend,” says Waters.

“I think we’re heading in a good direction as a team, my car’s been running at the front the last few rounds which has been awesome, but the other guys have had good runs as well and having JC (James Courtney) right with me in Townsville was really good for team points. We’re making good progress with the cars and feel we can continue to be competitive, so I’m looking forward to the weekend.”

There are three races this weekend at the OTR SuperSprint at The Bend Motorsport Park, one on Saturday and two on Sunday.
