TOMAS Mezera joins us for this week’s episode of the V8 Sleuth Podcast powered by Timken.

Born in 1958 in what was then still known as Czechoslovakia, Mezera opens up about growing up under a communist regime and the remarkable story of how he defected to the west at the age of 20, which included living on the streets for a time in Austria before landing in a refugee camp, and the dream that helped him choose Australia as his new homeland.

We also cover his years working towards his racing dream and achieving success in Australia before heading to England to battle against future F1 stars, before securing a Bathurst 1000 victory which not even the team he drove for was expecting.

He talks about his years as an established touring car star in Australia, racing with Larry Perkins and how ‘LP’ was responsible for a couple of his big career breaks, including his recruitment by the Holden Racing Team, and he tells a host of stories from his time at HRT – yes, including the infamous ‘bucket of water’ incident – plus the time he had a genuine F1 star lined up to race with him in the Bathurst 1000 only for their F1 team to shut the deal down!

He also tackles your National Motor Racing Museum Couch Racer Questions and our Motorfocus Top 10 Shootout.

Oh, and he tells us the proper way to pronounce ‘Mezera’ – we’ve been saying it wrong all these years!
